Da martedì 30 maggio Andrej Dubravsky torna in Italia con una nuova mostra personale alla Richter Fine Art. Negli ultimi anni l’artista si è concentrato su questioni ambientali e sugli effetti che l’ambiente ha sulle persone, l’agricoltura intensiva, l’industria globale, la politica.

In quest’ultimo periodo il suo lavoro si è spostato su soggetti personali, intimi: il suo gatto e sé stesso.

In un momento storico in cui il mondo è praticamente in fiamme e gli artisti stanno cercando di affrontare questioni attuali e problemi sociali, come le questioni politiche, identità, e crisi climatica, Dubravsky preferisce occuparsi di questioni personali e private come la relazione di una persona e un animale.

Nonostante la sua volontà Dubravsky appare, nei suoi autoritratti, ansioso, mentre i gatti dipinti sono allegri e questa miscela crea nello spettatore una sorta di ambiguità. La mostra che porta il nome del gatto dell’artista, Alica, è un tributo doloroso, un addio, al suo gatto scomparso lo scorso settembre, ed è tuttora traumatico e tragico per l’artista. Il gatto è un soggetto che ritorna molto spesso nella storia dell’arte, dagli antichi egizi a Renoir, da Da Vinci a Manet e Picasso, così anche in questo caso, questa nuova serie di dipinti nasce dall’amore dell’artista nel condividere con la pittura il rapporto gioioso, intenso e amorevole con i propri gatti.

La serie pittorica degli autoritratti con i gatti sono cominciati con lo scoppio della guerra in Ucraina, non è un caso, proprio perché l’artista (di base a Bratislava) ha utilizzato la pittura e i suoi animali domestici in maniera terapeutica, per calmare il proprio animo, abbassare i livelli di ansia e per ricominciare a dipingere.

Richter gallery is pleased to present our third solo show with the artist Andrej Dubravsky.

Titled ALICA, the exhibitions opens on 30 May 2023.

In recent years the artist has focused on environmental issues and the effects that has on people, intensive agriculture, industry global, politics.

In the latter period his work has moved to personal, intimate subjects: his cat and himself.

In this historical moment where the world is practically on fire and artists are trying to address current issues and social problems, such as political issues, identity, and climate crisis, Dubravsky prefers to deal with personal and private issues such as a person's relationship and an animal.

Despite his will Dubravsky appears, in his self-portraits, anxious, while the painted cats are cheerful and this mixture creates a sort of ambiguity in the viewer. The exhibition entitled with the name of Dubravsky's cat, Alica, is a painful tribute, a farewell, to his cat who disappeared last September, and is still traumatic and tragic for the artist. The cat is a subject that returns very often in the history of art, from the ancient Egyptians to Renoir, from Da Vinci to Manet and Picasso, so also in this case, this new series of paintings arises from the artist's love of sharing with painting the joyful, intense and loving relationship with one's cats.

This series of self-portraits with cats began with the outbreak of war in Ukraine, it is no coincidence, precisely because the artist (based in Bratislava) used paint and his pets in a therapeutic way, to calm hir spirits, lower anxiety levels and to start painting again.
