MARCO PAUL LORENZETTI & EDOUARD NG - 4041

Rome was called urbs aeterna and still is today, it is the only city on Earth dated before 4000.

For centuries now, technological singularity has produced enormous wealth and prosperity throughout the solar system. Improvements in health care, education and living standards have led humans to evolve into a race of giants: 2 meters tall, muscular and highly athletic, with a lifespan of 100 years. The vast majority of citizens have opted for genetic engineering and biotechnological upgrades that offer immortality, like the two artists who present their new works in the spaces of the Richter Fine Art gallery from Tuesday 5 October: Marco Paul Lorenzetti and Edouard NG .

For the 4041 exhibition, the two artists decided to remove their brain chip to produce works as 100% human, not cyborg, as if they were back in 2021.

On show, the works were all produced in 4041 using materials and techniques used in 2021. The works are disturbing and almost absurd as Marco Paul Lorenzetti and Edouard NG are abusing many tools from 2000 years ago and working without the flow of data that the chip usually causes it to flow into their brains. The relevance of these works lies only in their irrationality in a new world dominated by an extreme rationality.

Edouard NG's work draws attention to the dizzying and absurd paradoxes of our society driven by the insatiable desire to entertain and consume.

Halfway between science and sociology, the artist's research questions specific contemporary behaviors, observing the "show business people" under the microscope, isolating residues and components and becoming their interpreter. The artist defines his practice as a sort of reverse archeology: a famous figure becomes a hieroglyph, the familiar becomes a stranger.

Marco Paul Lorenzetti's painting depicts people in various states of rest, they gather, mingle, relax, proceed aimlessly through the movements of social rituals. Lorenzetti's characters interpret in an approximate way, they seem to exist in states of idle excess, smoking hashish and enjoying sumptuous spreads or parading along with the musical accompaniment.

As Jerry Saltz writes, “the work here tends towards the figurative, the personal and the eccentric rather than the efficient. There is an imaginary or visionary side to almost everything. Few things are diligent images of the reality witnessed.”

EDOUARD NG (b. Paris, FR). French-German born, recently became American. Received a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from the Pratt Institute in 2018. Marco Paul Lorenzetti (1992, Chicago, IL) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and has a BFA from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Her work has been included in a solo show at Thierry Goldberg Gallery, NY; in a group exhibition at the Willumsens Museum, Denmark, The Hole Gallery, NY, and the Steuben Gallery in NY.

Roma si chiamava urbs aeterna e tutt’oggi lo è ancora, è l'unica città sulla Terra datata prima del 4000.

Da secoli ormai, la singolarità tecnologica ha prodotto enormi ricchezze e prosperità in tutto il sistema solare. I miglioramenti nell'assistenza sanitaria, nell'istruzione e negli standard di vita hanno portato gli esseri umani a evolversi in una razza di giganti: alti 2 metri, muscolosi e altamente atletici, con una durata di vita di 100 anni. La stragrande maggioranza dei cittadini ha optato per l'ingegneria genetica e gli aggiornamenti biotecnologici che offrono l’immortalità, come i due artisti che presentano da martedì 5 ottobre le loro nuove opere negli spazi della galleria Richter Fine Art: Marco Paul Lorenzetti e Edouard NG.

Per la mostra 4041, i due artisti hanno deciso di rimuovere il loro chip cerebrale per produrre lavori come umani al 100%, non cyborg, come se fossero tornati nel 2021.

In mostra, le opere sono state tutte prodotte nel 4041 attraverso materiali e tecniche utilizzate nel 2021. I lavori sono inquietanti e quasi assurdi poiché Marco Paul Lorenzetti e Edouard NG stanno abusando di molti strumenti di 2000 anni fa e lavorano senza il flusso di dati che il chip di solito fa affluire nel loro cervello. La rilevanza di queste opere risiede solo nella loro irrazionalità in un nuovo mondo egemonizzato da una razionalità estrema.

Il lavoro di Edouard NG attira l'attenzione sui paradossi vertiginosi e assurdi della nostra società guidata dal desiderio insaziabile di intrattenere e consumare.

A metà tra scienza e sociologia, la ricerca dell’artista mette in discussione specifici comportamenti contemporanei, osservando al microscopio il “popolo dello show business”, ne isola residui e componenti e se ne fa interprete. L’artista definisce la sua pratica una sorta di archeologia inversa: una figura famosa diventa un geroglifico, il familiare diventa uno sconosciuto.

La pittura di Marco Paul Lorenzetti, raffigura persone in vari stati di riposo, si raccolgono, si mescolano, si rilassano, procedono senza meta attraverso i movimenti dei rituali sociali. I personaggi di Lorenzetti interpretano in modo approssimativo, sembrano esistere in stati di ozioso eccesso, fumando hashish e godendosi sontuose creme da spalmare o sfilando insieme all'accompagnamento musicale.

Come scrive Jerry Saltz “il lavoro qui tende al figurativo, al personale e all'eccentrico piuttosto che all'efficiente. C'è un lato immaginario o visionario in quasi tutto. Poche cose sono immagini diligenti della realtà testimoniata.

Marco Paul Lorenzetti (1992, Chicago, IL) vive e lavora a Brooklyn, NY e ha un BFA all’Università del Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Edouard NG, nato a Parigi, vive e lavora a Los Angeles. Ha ricevuto un master in scultura all’istituto Pratt nel 2018.
